Is Hyaluronic Acid Good For Your Skin?

Is Hyaluronic Acid Good For Your Skin?

Klapp Ireland & United Kingdom

As we know, Hyaluronic Acid is an ingredient that is extremely popular right now on the internet, we see everyone and their mother using it in Tik Tok, Youtube & Instagram, hyping it up to no end.

But the real question is, how do you know if Hyaluronic Acid is something you should add into your skincare routine?

But the real question is, how do you know if Hyaluronic Acid is something you should add into your skincare routine?

Let’s break it down!

First off, if you are new to skincare, the name, Hyaluronic Acid can sound intimidating and scary. We hear the word ‘acid’ and suddenly it sounds very serious but - have no fear – it is not an acid that will exfoliate or burn the skin.

Okay, so what is it?

Hyaluronic is a humectant – which basically means that it draws in water from its environment. From a molecular stand point ( sciency stuff ) Hyaluronic Acid is a very greedy, strong molecule, it LOVES water.

Which is great for our skin, right? Our skin thrives when it has a higher water content. Think of your skin like a sponge, when you add water, it plumps up and smooths out. When our skin lacks water, that is when we start to notice problems such as excessive dryness, flaking, breakouts and sensitivity.

Now there is one point with hyaluronic acid that I feel is vital to get across. Although it is a hydrating ingredient – it is not moisturising.

Hydration = water replenishing

Moisturise = oil replenishing

It is incredibly important that if you are using Hyaluronic Acid in say, a serum form, that you seal it in with a moisturiser. It is vital if your skin leans more towards the dehydrated/dry side and especially at night. (you should seal any serum with a moisturiser but this one is just extra important!)

Another side note is on application, always apply Hyaluronic serums onto dampened skin. As it’s humectant nature will absorb the water and use it to rehydrate your skin.

Water and hyaluronic acid

All in all, should you add Hyaluronic Acid to your skincare routine?

All in all, should you add Hyaluronic Acid to your skincare routine?

The answer is simple, if you suffer from dehydration - which all skin types do at some point – then there is no downside to adding this magic ingredient to your routine.

Just watch out for brands claiming it does a lot more than it actually does, although HA gives a plumping and softening effect to the skin – it is not an anti-ageing ingredient. Another thing brands will do, is market products to have 60%-80% Hyaluronic Acid in them – don’t fall into the hype. 60-80% is way above the means of what your skin needs and could even end up drying your skin out more, especially if you live in a drier climate.
